Germany, Belarus win two golds in canoe

BEIJING, Aug. 22 (UPI) -- Germany and Belarus came away with two gold medals each Friday on the first of two days of Olympic canoe and kayak finals.

Germany's Martin Hollstein and Adnreas Ihle swept from behind late in the race to win the kayak doubles and the Germans added a second victory in the women's kayak four.

The Belarus golds came from the brother team of Andrei and Aliaksandr Bahdanovich in the canoe doubles and the men's kayak four.

No American made the final of any of the 12 flatwater canoe/kayak races. China had four entries in the finals Friday but didn't medal in any.

The other two gold medals awarded Friday went to Tim Brabants of Britain in the kayak singles and Attila Sandor of Hungary in the canoe singles.

The men's races Friday were conducted over 1,000 meters. The men's races Saturday will be 500 meters long. All women's races are 500 meters.
