NEW HAVEN, Conn., Aug. 22 (UPI) -- Top-seeded Anna Chakvetadze of Russia and unseeded Dane Caroline Wozniacki won semifinal matches Friday in the Pilot Pen Tennis event in New Haven, Conn.

Both players defeated French opponents to reach the championship round of the hard-court tournament, a final tuneup for the U.S. Open, which begins Monday.

Chakvetadze triumphed over Amelie Mauresmo 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 and Wozniacki downed Alize Cornet 7-5, 6-4.

The Russian star will try for her eighth WTA title when she goes against the 18-year-old Wozniacki Saturday.

Wozniacki, who has won 11 of her last 12 matches, claimed her first tour title in Sweden three weeks ago.
