BEIJING, Aug. 21 (UPI) -- LaShawn Merritt won the Olympic gold medal in the 400-meter run Thursday, leading an American sweep of the top three places.

Defending Olympic champion Jeremy Wariner settled for the silver and David Neville took the bronze.

It was the third medal sweep of the Olympics for the United States, the others coming in the men's 400-meter hurdles and the women's individual saber fencing event. Jamaica had a sweep in the women's 200-meter dash.
