CLEVELAND, Aug. 20 (UPI) -- Kansas City Royals outfielder Mitch Maier was taken to a hospital Wednesday after being struck in the face by a pitched ball.

A high inside pitch by Cleveland's Zach Jackson ricocheted off Maier's helmet, striking him on the cheek and nose.

Maier fell to the ground but was able to walk from the playing field with a towel over his face. He was taken to a Cleveland hospital for evaluation.

Cleveland won the game 8-5.
