BEIJING, Aug. 17 (UPI) -- China's Lin Dan, known in his home country as "Super Dan," dominated as expected Sunday and won the men's Olympic badminton singles gold medal.

One of the most popular athletes in the nation, Lin breezed through the tournament to uphold his advance billing as one of the most heavily favored athletes in the Games.

He defeated Lee Chong Wei of Malaysia 21-12, 21-8. Lin took a 7-1 lead in the opening set and then won the first eight points in the second.

The mixed doubles title was also decided Sunday. South Koreans Young Dae Lee and Hyo Jung Lee were 21-11, 21-17 winners over a pairing from Indonesia.
