Govortsova, Pironkova advance in New Haven

NEW HAVEN, Conn., Aug. 17 (UPI) -- Olga Govortsova and Tsvetana Pironkova scored opening-round victories Sunday in the women's Pilot Pen Tennis tournament, a U.S. Open tuneup, in New Haven, Conn.

Govortsova, of Belarus, eliminated Russian Alisa Kleybanova 6-0, 6-0 in a contest between 19-year-olds.

Pironkova, of Bulgaria, defeated American Bethanie Mattek 7-7 (7-4, 0-6, 6-0.
