Americans second in volleyball group

BEIJING, Aug. 17 (UPI) -- Logan Tom had 15 kills and 15 blocks Sunday, leading the United States to a five-set victory over Poland in Olympic women's volleyball.

The Americans closed out preliminary play with a 4-1 record and a second-place finish in Group A behind Cuba -- setting up an appearance in the quarterfinals on Tuesday.

It was the second five-set win for the Americans in the tournament -- the set scores being 18-25, 25-21, 19-25, 25-19, 15-13. The United States also defeated China in a match that went the full five sets.

Cuba finished group play with a three-set win over Venezuela. Brazil also wound up unbeaten in Group B, completing the preliminaries by handing Italy its first loss in straight sets.

The traditionally talented Brazilian team did not lose a set in its five group games. Brazil is looking for its first Olympic gold in women's volleyball, which became a part of the Games 44 years ago.
