BEIJING, Aug. 16 (UPI) -- Saturday's Olympic highlights:
-- American Michael Phelps somehow beat Milorad Cavic of Serbia to the wall in the final of the 100-meter butterfly to tie Mark Spitz for the most gold medals won in a single Olympics. Phelps will go after his eighth gold in a relay Sunday. Cavic made an agonizingly slow glide to the wall while Phelps was making a final, lunging, come-from-behind stroke. The difference between them amounted to .01 of a second.
-- The fastest runner and swimmer in the world were both determined. Cesar Cielo of Brazil won the 50-meter freestyle and Usain Bolt of Jamaica captured the 100-meter dash in the world record time of 9.69. American Tyson Gay, whose 9.68 at the Olympic trials did not count as a world record because of aiding wind, did not make the finals.
-- The United States found itself with just two boxers left in the Olympics after two more lost Saturday. Cuba, meanwhile, has nine remaining en route to many medals.
-- China's steamroller slowed down a little. The Chinese won only one gold medal Saturday and although they have 11 more golds than the United States, they trail the Americans in overall medals 54-47. China failed to win a medal in weightlifting for only the third time in 12 events
-- New Zealand began the day with no medals at all and finished it with five -- two of them gold. Britain had four golds Saturday, more than anybody else. One came in swimming, one in rowing and two in track cycling.
-- Chinese officials said the Air Pollution Index was 23, which means the air was relatively pollution free. Recent heavy rains have helped.
