BEIJING, Aug. 16 (UPI) -- The United States, with Michael Phelps swimming the butterfly leg, won the Olympic gold medal Sunday in the 400-meter medley relay in Beijing.

It was the eighth gold medal of these Olympics for Phelps, the most in history by any competitor. He finished the Games with 14 golds for his career, five more than anyone else.

Australia took the silver. The bronze went to Japan.

Phelps was joined on the relay team by Aaron Peirsol, Brendan Hansen and Jason Lezak.
