BEIJING, Aug. 16 (UPI) -- Chris Hoy of Britain won the Olympic gold medal Saturday in Keirin cycling.

Edgar Ross of Britain took the silver. The bronze went to Kiyofumi Nagai of Japan.

The race employs a motorcycle to steadily increase the pace of the field until the final laps, when it pulls off the track and leaves the cyclists to sprint to the finish. It emerged as a wagering race in Japan more than a half century ago.
