BEIJING, Aug. 16 (UPI) -- Usain Bolt of Jamaica won the Olympic gold medal Saturday in the men's 100-meter dash, lowering the world record in the process.

Richard Thompson of Trinidad and Tobago took the silver. The bronze went to Walter Dix of the United States.

Bolt ran a 9.69, besting his own world record of 9.72, set in New York last June.

American Tyson Gay, who ran a wind-aided 9.68 at the American Olympic trials, finished fifth in his semifinal heat and failed to make the final. Former world record holder Asafa Powell of Jamaica ran fifth in the final.
