BEIJING, Aug. 15 (UPI) -- Rebecca Adlington won the Olympic gold medal Saturday in the women's 800-meter freestyle in Beijing.

Adlington broke the 19-year-old world record of American Janet Evans, the oldest world mark on the books in swimming. It was her second gold of these Games, following her victory in the 400-meter freestyle.

The silver went to Alessia Filippi of Italy and the bronze to Lotte Friis of Denmark.
