CLEVELAND, Aug. 15 (UPI) -- Los Angeles Angels shortstop Maicer Izturis will need season-ending surgery on his left thumb, the team announced Friday.

"That's a tough loss," Manager Mike Scioscia said. "We feel terrible for Izzy. We all know how valuable a part of our club he was."

The Angels made the announcement in Cleveland prior to a 3-2 loss to the Indians. Surgery is scheduled for Tuesday in Los Angeles.

The 27-year-old Izturis tore a ligament on the thumb Wednesday in the Angels' 10-7 loss to the Seattle Mariners, aggravating an injury he sustained against the Yankees Aug. 1.

The shortstop had a .269 batting average with three homers, 37 RBI and 14 doubles in 290 at-bats this season.

Erick Aybar becomes the Angels' starting shortstop and infielder Kendry Morales was recalled from Triple-A Salt Lake to fill Izturis' roster spot.
