OAKLAND, Calif., Aug. 14 (UPI) -- Dioner Navarro drove in the winning run with a 12th-inning single Thursday and the Tampa Bay Rays edged the Oakland Athletics 7-6.
Carlos Pena put the Rays up 6-5 with a lead-off homer in the 12th, and then Navarro drove in Cliff Floyd to make it 7-5. The insurance run came in handy when Kurt Suzuki grounded into a double play to drive in a run for the A's in the bottom half of the inning.
Floyd walked four times and scored each time. Navarro and Willy Aybar had two hits and two RBI each, B.J. Upton and Justin Ruggiano each drove in a run and Ben Zobrist had two hits in the Rays' seventh win in their last nine games.
The winner was Jason Hammel (4-3).
Trever Miller earned his first save.
Carlos Gonzalez hit a two-run first-inning homer, Dan Barton hit a two-run second-inning double and Frank Thomas had one RBI and one run scored for the Athletics, losers in 14 of their last 16 games.
The losing pitcher was Santiago Casilla (2-1).
