
BOSTON, Aug. 14 (UPI) -- David Ortiz highlighted a nine-run second inning with a three-run homer Thursday and the Boston Red Sox belted Texas 10-0 to complete a three-game sweep.
Seven others had one RBI apiece for Boston. Jed Lowrie and Dustin Pedroia had three hits each and Kevin Youkilis added two for the Red Sox, who remained 3 ½ games back of AL East-leading Tampa Bay.
The Rays recorded a 7-6 12-inning victory against Oakland Thursday.
Winner Daisuke Matsuzaka (14-2) gave up six hits in seven scoreless innings with five walks and five strikeouts.
Michael Young had two of the six hits for the Rangers, who have dropped eight of nine.
Losing pitcher Tommy Hunter (0-2), making his third major league start in place of the injured Vicente Padilla (back and shoulder ailments), surrendered nine runs -- seven earned -- and seven hits in 1 2/3 innings.
