
DETROIT, Aug. 13 (UPI) -- Vernon Wells hit a third-inning grand slam homer Wednesday and Toronto held on for a 4-3 rain-delayed victory at Detroit.
Before the contest was interrupted by rain for 49 minutes in the top of the seventh, winner David Purcey (2-3) hurled six shutout innings with three walks and four strikeouts.
Detroit scored three times in the bottom of the ninth before reliever Brandon League nailed down his first career save.
David Eckstein had three of the seven hits in the Blue Jays' seventh win in their last 10 contests.
Detroit starting and losing pitcher Kenny Rogers yielded four earned runs and seven hits in 6 1/3 innings.
In the ninth, Miguel Cabrera an RBI groundout and Edgar Renteria hit a two-run double.
Magglio Ordonez had two of the Tigers' four hits, extending his hitting streak to 12 straight games with a sixth inning single.
