WASHINGTON, Aug. 13 (UPI) -- The New York Mets exploded for eight runs in the third inning Wednesday and went on to bury the Washington Nationals 12-0.

Daniel Murphy bashed a two-run homer and singled in another run, Fernando Tatis had a homer and two RBI and Carlos Beltran hit a two-run double, helping the Mets hand Washington its sixth straight defeat.

John Maine (10-7) picked up the win, giving the Nationals just one hit and striking out six over five innings. Maine was activated from the 15-day disabled list prior to the game.

Brian Stokes pitched the final four innings for New York, registering the first save of his major league career.

Jason Bergmann (2-9) was the loser. Bergman gave up10 runs and eight hits and walked six batters in three innings.
