Phelps breaks all-time gold medal record

BEIJING, Aug. 12 (UPI) -- Michael Phelps became the all-time Olympic gold medal record-holder Wednesday with a triumph in the 200-meter butterfly.

Phelps broke the world record in the event for the seventh time, swimming a 1:52.03. It was his 10th career gold medal, the most in Olympic history, and his fourth of these Games. He remains on track to break the single-Olympic gold medal record of seven, owned by Mark Spitz.

The silver medal in Wednesday's race went to Laszlo Csch of Hungary and the bronze to Takeshi Matsuda of Japan. Scott Gordon named coach of Islanders


UNIONDALE, N.Y., Aug. 12 (UPI) -- Scott Gordon, who coached the AHL's Providence Bruins to 221 wins in five-plus seasons, moved up to the NHL Tuesday as coach of the New York Islanders.

Gordon, 45, succeeds Ted Nolan, who was fired in July.

An Islanders announcement said Gordon received a multiyear contract.

"Scott has been one of the top up-and-coming coaches in hockey and with good reason," said Garth Snow, the Islanders' general manager. "Through his work in the minor leagues and, most recently, with Providence ... he has gained an impeccable reputation. The entire Islanders organization looks forward to working with Scott."

Gordon had a 221-141-20-27 record with Providence.

"Garth has given me an unbelievable opportunity to coach in the NHL with the Islanders," Gordon said.

"From my time coaching in Providence, I've seen firsthand the talented young players in this organization. I look at the direction and the vision for this team and see a bright future."

Gordon, of Brockton, Mass., began his minor-league coaching career in 1994 with the the Atlanta Knights in the International Hockey League.

Nolan had a mark of 75-68-21 in two seasons with the Islanders.


U.S. unbeaten in Olympic volleyball

BEIJING, Aug. 12 (UPI) -- The United States men's volleyball team rallied from a set down Tuesday and defeated Italy to remain unbeaten in the Olympics.

The Americans again played without Coach Hugh McCutcheon, whose father-in-law was stabbed to death and mother-in-law was seriously injured last weekend by an assailant who then committed suicide. Chinese officials have labeled the attack as a random act of violence.

U.S. players printed the initials of the victims on their shoes as a tribute and then recorded a 24-26, 25-22, 25-15, 25-21 win over Italy.

The Americans are 2-0 in Group A and have clinched a spot in next week's quarterfinals. They will next meet Bulgaria on Thursday.

In Group B, Poland, Brazil and Russia are all 2-0. Russia was extended to five sets Tuesday before defeating Germany.


Red Sox get Paul Byrd from Indians

BOSTON, Aug. 12 (UPI) -- The Boston Red Sox acquired 37-year-old right-hander Paul Byrd Tuesday in a trade with the Cleveland Indians, who will get cash or a player to be named.

Byrd has been with the Indians the past three years. He is 7-10 with a 4.53 ERA this season, but 4-0 since the all-star break.

Boston's pitching staff has suffered from injuries. Curt Schilling had season-ending shoulder surgery, Bartolo Colon has been sidelined since June and Tim Wakefield recently was placed on the 15-day disabled list.

Byrd will start for Boston against Toronto Friday, mlb.com said.

The 13-year veteran has also played for the New York Mets, Atlanta, Philadelphia, Kansas City and Los Angeles Angels.


Granato leads hockey hall of fame list

COLORADO SPRINGS, Aug. 12 (UPI) -- Cammi Granato, who helped the U.S. women to the 1998 Olympic gold medal, will be the first woman inducted into the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame.

Hall of Fame officials Tuesday said Granato, Brett Hull, Brian Leetch and Mike Richter make up the hall's class of 2008. Induction ceremonies are scheduled for Oct. 10 in Denver.

Granato was a 15-year veteran of the U.S. women's national team. She is the national team's all-time leading scorer with 343 points -- 186 goals and 157 assists -- over 205 games.

Hull, third on the all-time NHL scoring list with 741 goals, was on two Stanley Cup-winning teams during his 20-year NHL career.

Leetch, a native Texan, was an 11-time all-star during his 18 years in the NHL. A two-time Norris Trophy winner, he is one of seven defensemen to total more than 1,000 points (1,028) over his career.

Richter played his entire 14-year career in New York and was a teammate of Leetch's in 1993-94 when the Rangers won their first Stanley Cup since 1940. He ranks first in team history with 301 wins in 666 games and was selected to three all-star teams.
