Guilty plea in U.K. soccer blackmail case

MANCHESTER, England, Aug. 12 (UPI) -- A British judge told a former soccer goalkeeper he likely will spend time in prison for attempting to blackmail another soccer player.

Ashley Timms, 22, was once a member of the Manchester City under-19 side. He pleaded guilty in Crown Court to a charge of making unwarranted demands with menaces, the Times of London said Tuesday.

During Monday's hearing in Manchester, the judge told Timms, "This case carries, inevitably, a prison sentence, no doubt about it."

Timms, who was granted bail pending sentencing Sept. 5, was accused of threatening to publish sexually oriented images of an unidentified player unless the player paid him 15,000 pounds, about $28,500.

Timms played with several clubs and was last with Cambridge City on a non-contract basis, the Times said.
