BEIJING, Aug. 10 (UPI) -- Rebecca Adlington of Britain won the Olympic gold medal Monday in the women's 400-meter freestyle in Beijing.

American Katie Hoff had almost a full body lead with 50 meters to go, but was passed at the last second and had to settle for the silver -- .07 of a second behind Adlington.

Another British swimmer, Joanne Jackson, took the bronze.

World record holder Federica Pellegrini faded to fifth and defending champion Laure Manaudou of France finished last in the eight-swimmer field.
