BEIJING, Aug. 10 (UPI) -- Serbia's Ana Ivanovic withdrew Sunday from women's tennis at the 2008 Beijing Games because of a right thumb injury.

She was the No. 1 seed on the women's side and was favored to capture a gold medal in her first Olympic appearance.

"I've been struggling with it," the top-ranked player on the WTA Tour said in a statement. "For the past month I've been receiving so much treatment and I've been doing everything to recover after Montreal, where I really wasn't able to play. It was so painful. I took some time off and haven't played a tournament in 10 days. I flew a doctor in from Australia to help."

She is the latest professional player to pull out of the Beijing Games with an injury, joining Lindsay Davenport, Mario Ancic, Ivo Karlovic, Maria Sharapova and Tatiana Golovin, while Andy Roddick, Richard Gasquet and Ivan Ljubicic all chose not to compete.
