BEIJING, Aug. 9 (UPI) -- Michael Phelps of the United States set a world record in winning the Olympic gold medal Sunday in the 400-meter individual medley.

It is the first of a possible eight gold medals Phelps could claim at the Beijing Olympics.

The silver medal was won by Laszlo Cseh of Hungary and the bronze went to Ryan Lochte of the United States.

Phelps covered the distance in 4:03.84, more than a second under his own world mark.
