MLB: Tampa Bay 5, Seattle 3

SEATTLE, Aug. 9 (UPI) -- Carlos Pena had a solo homer and two RBI for Tampa Bay, which beat Seattle 5-3 Friday to boost its first-place lead in the American League East to 3 1/2 games.

The Rays won for the 69th time this season, gaining a game on the second-place Boston Red Sox, who lost 5-3 to the Chicago White Sox.

B.J. Upton drove in a run and scored another for Tampa Bay.

James Shields (10-7) got the win, yielding three runs and nine hits in 6 2/3 innings.

Wladimir Balentien hit a two-run home run for the Mariners.

Carlos Silva (4-13) lost his fourth straight decision. Silva worked into the seventh inning, surrendering all five Tampa Bay runs.
