BEIJING, Aug. 9 (UPI) -- The United States Olympic Committee said Saturday a family member of one of the U.S. men's volleyball coaches had been stabbed to death in Beijing.

The attack, coming less than 24 hours after the Olympic opening ceremonies, took place on the second story of the Drum Tower, a 15th Century wooden building that is a popular tourist attraction in the downtown section of the city.

There was no immediate word from the USOC as to the identity of the victim or the name of the coach.

China's Xinhua news agency said the attacker was Chinese and committed suicide by jumping off the tower. The report said at least one other person was injured in the attack. The victims were accompanied by a local guide.

"Our priority in this hour is to attend to the needs of the family members, the U.S. Olympic men's indoor volleyball team and staff, and the entire U.S. Olympic delegation," a statement from the USOC said. "In addition, the USOC is working closely with the United States Embassy, United States law enforcement authorities and local law enforcement authorities."

Xinhua identified the attacker as Tan Yongming, 47, from the city of Hangzhou in eastern China.
