Emil Brown knocked in a run with a sixth-inning solo homer. Mark Ellis had one RBI and Carlos Gonzalez added two hits for the Athletics, who hadn't won since July 27, when they beat Texas 6-5.

Winner Dallas Braden (3-2) surrendered two earned runs and five hits in seven innings. Brad Ziegler earned his first major league save.

Detroit scored on Marcus Thames' two-run second-inning homer. Edgar Renteria had two of the five hits for the Tigers, who have lost six of seven.
