SAN DIEGO, Aug. 8 (UPI) -- Outfielder Brian Giles will not join the Boston Red Sox after rejecting their waiver claim Friday.

Giles was released by San Diego Thursday, but chose to waive the no-trade clause in his contract, which means he will stay with the Padres unless they release him before the 2008 season ends.

San Diego said on its Web site Friday that the 37-year-old Giles was perturbed when details of Boston's waiver claim were leaked because the process normally is private.

"I didn't know everybody was supposed to know, especially when it wasn't a done deal and it wouldn't go down," Giles said. "It's kind of between myself and my agent, Boston and the Padres."

The .293 career hitter could have helped the Padres save between $2.75 million and $6 million on his contact if he had accepted Boston's claim.

Giles is batting .295 this season with six home runs and 37 RBI.
