Kansas gives basketball coach big contract

LAWRENCE, Kan., Aug. 7 (UPI) -- Kansas Coach Bill Self was rewarded for winning the NCAA men's basketball title with a 10-year, $30 million contract, the university announced Thursday.

The deal is retroactive to April 1, six days before Self's Jayhawks defeated Memphis 75-68 in overtime in the NCAA tournament final, and runs through March 2018, when Self would be 56.

The Kansas news release said Self's salary "comes from private resources. No tuition dollars or state funds are used."

He will be paid $3 million a year with $229,900 as a base salary and $2,270,100 for "professional services" that may include promotional duties and endorsement of products affiliated with University of Kansas Athletics. He also receives $500,000 a year for remaining as the Kansas coach. Self's previous deal paid him $1.6 million a year.

Self just completed his fifth season as the Jayhawks' coach. He has taken Kansas to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament three times, won or shared four Big 12 Conference regular-season titles and the last three Big 12 tournaments. He has a 142-32 overall record at Kansas and is 349-137 over a 15-year head coaching career.
