

LOS ANGELES, Aug. 6 (UPI) -- Tommy Haas lost while Marat Safin and Carols Moya advanced in first-round play Tuesday in the Countywide Classic tennis event in Los Angeles.
American Donald Young beat the eighth-seeded Haas 6-2, 6-4, in the $475,000 hard-court tournament. Haas, from Germany, won the event in 2004 and 2006.
Fifth-seeded Safin of Russia disposed of American John Isner 6-3, 6-4.
Moya, the No. 7 seed, needed three sets and a tiebreaker to defeat Xavier Malisse of Belgium, 6-2, 1-6, 7-6 (7-5).
In other matches involving Americans, Wayne Odesnik ousted countryman Bobby Reynolds 4-6, 6-1, 6-4; Vincent Spadea beat Sebastien Grosjean of France 6-3, 3-6, 6-3; and Amer Delic dumped Israel's Dudi Sela, 6-4, 6-4. Sam Warburg fell to Dusan Vemic of Serbia 3-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-4.
Italian qualifier Andrea Stoppini beat Russian Igor Kunitsyn 6-1, 6-3.
