SAN FRANCISCO, Aug. 6 (UPI) -- Mike Hampton turned in a solid pitching performance and hit an RBI double Tuesday when the visiting Atlanta Braves trounced the San Francisco Giants 11-4.
Hampton (1-0), returning to the mound after being sidelined by a series of injuries, tossed seven innings, scattering two runs on four hits.
Yunel Escobar and Omar Infante each had two runs batted in each for the Braves, winning for only the third time in 11 games. Kelly Johnson went 3- for-3 with an RBI and scored three runs.
Jonathan Sanchez (8-8) took the loss, giving up three runs on seven hits while striking out five.
Fred Lewis had a solo home run for the Giants. Aaron Rowand, Bengie Molina and Jose Castillo each added an RBI.
The Braves padded their 6-4 lead with five runs in the top of the ninth. Martin Prado was hit by a pitch and Johnson dropped a sacrifice bunt, putting runners on the corners. Pinch-hitter Greg Norton hit a single to right, scoring pinch-runner Gregor Blanco before Escobar popped up for the first out.
Mark Kotsay drove home another run with a single to right. Casey Kotchman added an RBI ground-rule double to left-center. Infante turned a bloop hit to left into a two-run double for the final score.
Mike Gonzalez closed it out for the Braves, yielding a lead-off single to Castillo. Emmanuel Burriss grounded into a double play and Eugenio Velez went down on strikes to end the game.
