Report: Favre, Packers at 'stalemate'

GREEN BAY, Wis., Aug. 5 (UPI) -- Record-setting quarterback Brett Favre has told ESPN that he asked for his release from the Green Bay Packers.

Favre reported to the team this week, ending a retirement he announced in March, but the Packers were apparently at a loss of what to do with the 38-year-old veteran, since they'd already taken steps to replace him at quarterback, including naming Aaron Rodgers the team's starting quarterback.

"We're at a stalemate," Favre told ESPN.com after meeting with Packers Coach Mike McCarthy Tuesday. He said he agreed with McCarthy that his being on the practice field was a "distraction."

He told ESPN.com he planned to meet with team President Mark Murphy and General Manager Ted Thompson.

Favre said Green Bay had rejected his request to talk with other teams in the NFC North. Favre is friends with members of the Minnesota Vikings coaching staff, including head coach Brad Childress.

Favre, who played 16 of his 17 NFL seasons in Green Bay, ended last season with several NFL records including most career touchdown passes (442), passing yards (61,655) and completions (5,377). He also owns the record with 160 victories as a starting quarterback.
