NEW YORK, Aug. 2 (UPI) -- Mike Mussina retired the last 17 batters he faced Saturday and the New York Yankees registered an 8-2 win over the LA Angels of Anaheim.
Mussina (14-7) continued a push to become a 20-game winner for the first time in his 18-year major league career by giving up two runs -- one earned -- and two hits in seven innings with two walks and five strikeouts.
Wilson Betemit had two hits, one a two-run homer in the bottom of the second. Bobby Abreu, Jose Molina and Alex Rodriguez all belted solo homers and Molina had three hits for the Yankees, who had lost five of six.
Gary Matthews Jr. had one RBI and one run scored on Betemit's second-inning throwing error. Howie Kendrick had two of the three hits for the Angels, who had won nine of their previous 10 games.
Losing pitcher Jered Weaver (9-9) yielded six earned runs and eight hits, including the four homers, in five innings.
