SEATTLE, Aug. 2 (UPI) -- Garrett Olson came within two outs of his first complete game Friday and the Baltimore Orioles used an eight-run fifth inning to defeat Seattle 10-5.
Olson (8-5), in his second major-league season, threw 99 pitches through eight innings and was sent out in the ninth in a bid to complete a shutout. But he loaded the bases with one out and had to give way to Lance Cormier.
Cormier proceeded to give up four hits that accounted for five runs -- three of which were charged to Olson.
Baltimore had only a 1-0 lead going into the fifth, during which 12 batters came to the plate. Jay Payton highlighted the inning with a three-run triple and Adam Jones had a two-run single.
Jarrod Washburn (5-10) was tagged with the loss after giving up six runs in 4 2/3 innings.
It was the eighth meeting between the cellar-dwelling teams this season and Baltimore has won seven of them.
