MONTREAL, Aug. 1 (UPI) -- Tamira Paszek pulled off one of the biggest surprises in women's tennis this year Thursday, eliminating top-seeded Ana Ivanovic in the Rogers Cup.
Paszek reached the semifinals of an Australian Open tune-up early in the season, but then failed to get past the third round in her next 11 starts.
That streak ended Thursday with a 6-2, 1-6, 6-2 victory over Ivanovic that set up a quarterfinal meeting with No. 11 seed Victoria Azarenka.
Azarenka advanced when Virginie Razzano retired while trailing in the second set.
Second-seeded Jelena Jankovic had an easy route to the quarterfinals thanks to a 6-3, 6-2 decision over Stephanie Dubois.
Dominika Cibulkova will be Jankovic's quarterfinal opponent after defeating Tamarine Tanasugarn 7-6 (7-2), 6-2.
