BOSTON, Aug. 1 (UPI) -- Jed Lowrie's two-out, infield single in the 12th inning drove in Jason Bay from third Friday and gave the Boston Red Sox a 2-1 victory over Oakland.
Bay paid dividends in his first game with the Red Sox, having come to Boston from Pittsburgh Thursday in the three-team trade that sent slugger Manny Ramirez to the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Bay scored both Boston runs and delivered a two-out triple in the 12th off loser Alan Embree (1-4). J.D. Drew was intentionally walked to get to Lowrie, who failed to get the ball out of the infield but still drove in the winning run.
Lowrie also drove in Bay in the second with a sacrifice fly after Bay had drawn a one-out walk and gone to third on Drew's double.
The Red Sox broke a three-game losing streak and stayed three games behind division-leading Tampa Bay in the American League East.
Mike Timlin (4-3), the sixth Boston pitcher, worked the top of the 12th to get the win.
Oakland has lost four in a row.
