MLB: Detroit 14, Cleveland 12 (13 inn.)

CLEVELAND, July 31 (UPI) -- Placido Polanco put Detroit in front with an RBI groundout in the 13th inning Wednesday and the Tigers came from six runs behind to defeat Cleveland 14-12.

The teams combined for 41 hits and six errors in a wild contest that saw the Tigers rally from a 7-1 deficit to take a 12-11 lead in the ninth on Polanco's sacrifice fly.

Kelly Shoppach then hit his second homer of the game in the bottom half of the inning to tie it.

With Juan Rincon (2-3) on the mound in the 13th, Carlos Guillen singled with one away and went to third on a base hit by Curtis Granderson. Guillen scored on Polanco's grounder to third.

Detroit got an insurance run when Matt Joyce reached on an infield single. First baseman Andy Gonzalez fielded the ball and his wild throw to first allowed Granderson to score.

Andy Fossum (2-0) worked the final two innings to get the win. Fossum loaded the bases with nobody out in the 11th, but escaped with a strike out and double-play grounder. He then worked a perfect 12th.
