BERKSHIRE, England, July 31 (UPI) -- Juli Inkster shot a bogey-free 7-under-par 65 Thursday to grab a one-stroke lead after the first round of the Women's British Open in Berkshire, England.

The 48-year-old native of Santa Cruz, Calif., is trying to become the oldest major champion ever in the women's professional golf.

In her post-round comments, Inkster rejected the notion that winning a major is any different than winning a regular tournament.

"I just like to win," she said. "I feel better now than when I was in my 30s (and) I just want to be around on Sunday."

If she accomplishes the feat, she will have recorded a career Grand Slam, having won twice each at the Kraft Nabisco Championship, the LPGA Championship and the U.S. Women's Open.

Yuri Fudoh, Momoko Ueda, Ji Yai Shin, Ji Young Oh, Johanna Head, Laura Diaz and Stacy Prammanasudh share second place at 6-under 66.

World No. 1 Lorena Ochoa, the defending champion, shot 3-under 69 and is tied for 22nd place.
