Jobs responds to health rumors

CUPERTINO, Calif., July 27 (UPI) -- Apple Inc. chief Steve Jobs has told a newspaper about his health problems, but the conversation was off the record, a New York Times columnist says.

New York Times business columnist Joe Nocera wrote in a column Saturday that he got a telephone call from Jobs. Nocera reported that nothing in the off-the-record conversation seemed to contradict an earlier Times story.

The newspaper reported that said Jobs' health problems were not life-threatening and that his cancer had not recurred, The San Jose (Calif.) Mercury News reported Sunday.

The Mercury News said Jobs' gaunt appearance at an event in June set off rumors he might be suffering from a recurrence of pancreatic cancer, which had been successfully treated in 2004.

When Apple's chief financial officer was asked last week about Jobs' health in a conference call with investors, Peter Oppenheimer, said Jobs' health was a "private matter."

The high-tech company, based in Cupertino, Calif., is known for its secrecy, which has been criticized in the past by corporate governance experts and investor advocates.
