SAINT-AMAND-MONTROND, France, July 26 (UPI) -- Stefan Schumacher of Germany won the Stage 20 time trial of the Tour de France Saturday.
Unless something unforeseen happens in Sunday's final stage, Spaniard Carlos Sastre virtually locked up his first Tour victory with a 12th-place finish.
Schumaker covered the 33-mile stretch from Cerilly to Saint-Amand-Montrond in one hour, three minutes and 50 seconds. Switzerland's world time trial champion Fabian Cancellara finished 21 seconds behind. Luxembourg's Kim Kirchen and American rider Christian Vande Velde finished close to a minute off the pace.
Sastre finished two minutes and 34 seconds back, good enough to retain the yellow jersey with Paris's Champs Elysees in his sights. Sastre held off attacks by his closest overall competitors while lapping teammate Frank Schleck, who dropped from second to sixth overall with a 54th-place finish
