LOS ANGELES, July 26 (UPI) -- Jonathan Broxton was called on to get Los Angeles out trouble in the eighth inning Friday and the Dodgers escaped with a 3-2 victory over Washington.

Los Angeles stayed within one game of division-leading Arizona in the NL West.

Washington scored a run in the eighth against starter Chad Billingsley and had two runners on with two away when Broxton was brought into the game. Broxton struck out Jesus Flores on four pitches to end the inning and then retired the Nationals in order in the ninth to earn his third save.

Billingsley (10-9) gave up two runs on five hits to get the victory.

Los Angeles scored all its runs in the sixth to overcome a 1-0 deficit. Nomar Garciaparra singled in two runs and Russell Martin scored from third on a ground out by James Loney.

The loss went to John Lannan, who surrendered three runs on five hits in seven innings.
