BEIJING, July 25 (UPI) -- Cycling

Gold medals to be awarded: 18

Dates of competition: Aug. 9-23

The Olympic cycling competition features a wide-ranging series of disciplines -- including action on the track, on the roads, on cross-country trails and on a moto-cross course.

Moto-cross racing is new to the Olympics this year.

American Levi Leipheimer, who was third in last year's Tour de France, will be seeking a road racing gold medal.

The only cycling gold medal won by an American four years ago went to Tyler Hamilton in the road time trial.

Ten different nations won a cycling gold in Athens.
