PITTSBURGH, July 24 (UPI) -- Yoslan Herrera threw six shutout innings Thursday and the Pittsburgh Pirates used three home runs to breeze past San Diego 9-1.

Herrera (1-1) made the third start of his major league career, having struggled in the first two. He bounced back, however, to give up six hits and strike out four in a 96-pitch performance.

Jason Bay and Xavier Nady hit solo homers in the fourth inning and Nate McLouth added a two-run shot in the eighth to help the Pirates capture their fourth straight win.

Clay Hensley made his first start for the Padres since moving into the rotation in place of Randy Wolf, who was dealt to Houston this week.

Hensley (1-1), recalled from Class AAA Portland following the Wolf trade, surrendered six runs on seven hits in five innings.
