NEW YORK, July 24 (UPI) -- Carlos Delgado's two-run double lifted the New York Mets over Philadelphia 3-1 Thursday and into first place in the National League East Division.

With the contest tied 1-1, two on and two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning, the much maligned first baseman laced an offering from losing pitcher J.C. Romero (4-3) down the line in left field.

The hit followed an intentional walk to David Wright and plated two runs.

Three other Mets had one hit each, and Wright drove in the other run for New York, who won two of the three-game series at Shea Stadium.

Winning pitcher Aaron Heilman (1-3) retired the only batter he faced in the top eighth inning, while closer Billy Wagner escaped after giving up a hit in the ninth to record his 26th save.

Jayson Werth's seventh inning homer accounted for Philadelphia's run.

Eric Bruntlett had three of the seven hits for the Phillies, losers in four of their last five games.
