Djokovic, Roddick move into third round

TORONTO, July 22 (UPI) -- Novak Djokovic and Andy Roddick had second-round victories Tuesday at the $2.6 million Rogers Masters in Toronto.

Djokovic, the No. 3 seed and defending champion needed only an hour, 17 minutes to beat Canadian Frank Dancevic 6-4, 6-4.

Roddick, a sixth-seeded American, had a tougher time against Frenchmen Nicolas Mahut. Roddick lost a second-set tiebreaker, but won 6-1, 6-7 (6-8), 6-3 win.

Damp conditions halted play and the first-round match between Russian Marat Safin and American Sam Querrey was suspended until Wednesday due to the rain. The duel will resume at 1-1 in the opening set.

In other first-round action, Fernando Verdasco beat Brazilian Thomaz Bellucci, 1-6, 6-3, 6-2; Croat Marin Cilic beat Lukas Dlouhy 6-3, 4-6, 6-3; and Arnaud Clement of France lost to Swede Jonas Bjorkman 6-3, 3-6, 6-0.
