Giants trade TE Shockey to New Orleans

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J., July 21 (UPI) -- The New York Giants traded tight end Jeremy Shockey to New Orleans Monday for the Saints' second-round and fifth-round 2009 draft choices.

"He's an impact player, and has been a key part of every offense he has played for -- both as a blocker and as a receiver," said Saints General Manager Mickey Loomis.

Shockey, selected by New York in the first round (14th overall) of the 2002 NFL Draft, has played his entire six year career with the Giants. He has 4,228 yards and 27 touchdowns on 371 receptions.

"Jeremy is a very talented football player who always played with great enthusiasm and great effort," Giants Coach Tom Coughlin said. "He was excited about playing. Jeremy always enjoyed being a physical football player and a tough football player.

During last year's Super Bowl run -- during which Shockey, 27, was injured and unable to play -- tight end Kevin Boss started two regular season and four playoff games.

Nets get guard Keyon Dooling from Magic

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J., July 21 (UPI) -- The New Jersey Nets got guard Keyon Dooling from the Orlando Magic Monday for a trade exception and cash.

"Keyon is a versatile NBA veteran," said Nets President Rod Thorn. "His ability to play both the point and shooting guard positions will add flexibility and depth to our backcourt rotation."

Dooling averaged 8.1 points, 1.4 rebounds and 1.8 assists in 72 games for the Magic last season. He appeared in 10 playoff contests with Orlando and averaged 6.6 points and 1.0 rebounds per game.

An eight-year veteran, Dooling, 28, has appeared in 465 games with the LA Clippers, Miami and Magic. He has career averages of 6.8 points, 1.3 rebounds and 1.9 assists per game.

Britain's Katie O'Brien posted a 7-6 (8-6), 4-6, 6-2 victory over fifth-seeded Tsvetana Pironkova of Bulgaria.

Valuev vs. Ruiz for vacant WBA heavyweight

BERLIN, July 21 (UPI) -- Nikolai Valuev will fight John Ruiz next month for the vacant WBA heavyweight title, the WBA announced.

The fight will take place Aug. 30 in Berlin, where Valuev defeated Ruiz in 2005 to take the WBA heavyweight belt.

Current champion Ruslan Chagaev was forced to pull out of his mandatory title defense against Valuev because of a ruptured Achilles tendon, forcing the WBA to set up the Valuev-Ruiz meeting.

The 2005 meeting is the only previous professional fight between Valuev (48-1, 34 KOs) and Ruiz (43-7-1, 29 KOs).
