BALTIMORE, July 20 (UPI) -- Justin Verlander came within one out of a complete game Sunday when the Detroit Tigers registered a 5-1 win at Baltimore.

In 8 2/3 innings, Verlander (8-9) gave up the earned run and only three hits.

He departed in favor of closer Todd Jones after walking two batters with two outs. Jones retired Kevin Millar on a game-ending groundout.

Detroit got two hits and two RBI from Ryan Rayburn, solo homers from Magglio Ordonez and Marcus Thames, and Brandon Inge's eighth-inning RBI groundout.

Thames, Ordonez and two others each had two hits for the Tigers, who earned a four-game series split.

Baltimore's lone run scored on Luke Scott's second-inning double.

Millar and Guillermo Quiroz had the other hits for the Orioles, who suffered their 15th straight loss.

Losing pitcher Brian Burres (7-6) gave up three earned runs on six hits and four walks in 5 1/3 innings with five strikeouts.
