Vikings' Asher Allen retires at age 24

STANFORD, Calif., July 17 (UPI) -- Samantha Stosur pulled off an upset Thursday and Patty Schnyder set up a quarterfinal meeting with Serena Williams at the Bank of the West Classic.
Stosur defeated third-seeded Vera Zvonareva 6-3, 6-2 in the last match of the evening. Stosur earned her second quarterfinal appearance of the year on the ATP Tour, this one against Aleksandra Wozniak.
Schnyder eliminated Alisa Kleybanova 7-6 (10-8), 6-4 to set up her quarterfinal match against the top-seeded Williams. Schnyder lost in straight sets to Williams this year in the finals of a tournament in India.
In other matches Thursday, Wozniak was a 6-4, 7-5 winner over Sybille Bammer and sixth-seeded Marion Bartoli defeated Anne Keothavong 6-3, 1-6, 7-5.
