Simon, Tursunov win Indy openers

INDIANAPOLIS, July 15 (UPI) -- Defending champion Dmitry Tursunov of Russia and second-seeded Frenchman Gilles Simon were winners Monday at the Indianapolis Tennis Championships.

Tursunov beat countryman Igor Kunitsyn 6-3, 7-5 and Simon defeated fellow Frenchman Nicolas Mahut 6-2, 3-6, 6-3.

Seventh-seeded American Robby Ginepri, the 2005 Indianapolis champion, lost to Chile's Paul Capdeville 6-4, 6-2.

In other opening-round action, German Benjamin Becker beat Dane Kristian Pless 6-3, 6-4; Taipei's Yen-Hsun Lu beat American Justin O'Neal 7-6 (7-2), 7-6 (14-12); and Australian Joseph Sirianni beat Russian Mikhail Ledovskikh 6-3, 1-2 after Ledovskikh retired due to an ankle injury.
