LAWRENCE, Kan., July 15 (UPI) -- The University of Kansas announced Tuesday that football Coach Mark Mangino signed a contract extension committing him to the school through the 2012 season.

Mangino, who has coached the Jayhawks' football team for six seasons, will earn $2.3 million per year.

He was the consensus national coach of the year in 2007 after leading Kansas to a 12-1 record. The Jayhawks recorded their first BCS bowl victory, a 24-21 decision over Virginia Tech in the Orange Bowl.

"This is an appropriate reward for someone who has done a terrific job with the Kansas football program," said Athletics Director Lew Perkins. "We think the Orange Bowl championship is just the beginning."
