STANFORD, Calif., July 15 (UPI) -- Sixth-seeded Frenchwoman Marion Bartoli defeated qualifier Akgul Amanmuradova of Uzbekistan 6-1, 6-3 Monday at the Bank of the West Classic at Stanford, Calif.
In other first-round action, Alisa Kleybanova of Russia topped fellow countrywoman Elena Vesnina 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 and Austrian Sybille Bammer beat Olga Govortsova of Belarus 7-5, 6-2.
Kateryna Bondarenko of Ukraine beat American Ashley Harkleroad, 7-5, 6-2 and Ai Sugiyama of Japan ousted American Alexa Glatch 6-2, 3-6, 7-5.
