NEW YORK, July 14 (UPI) -- Minnesota's Justin Morneau hit five homers in the final round Monday night to win the 2008 Home Run Derby at baseball's all-star festivities in Yankee Stadium.
Texas' Josh Hamilton set a single-round record with 28 home runs in the first round. But the first two rounds totals were erased for the final and Hamilton hit just three in the third round.
Morneau was the final addition to the Derby lineup and had the fewest regular-season home runs to date of all the contestants with 14. He is the first Twins player to win the Home Run Derby.
He participated in the Derby last season in San Francisco, but hit just four home runs and didn't make it out of the first round.
Only the top four advance from the first round. Hamilton's 28 homers eclipsed Bobby Abreu's single-round record of 24, set in 2005. Hamilton hit just four in the second round for a total of 32. Morneau had a two-round total of 17.
